CAMINHANTES é uma instalação multimídia site-specific de Ariel Kuaray Ortega, artista e cineasta Guarani Mbyá radicado na aldeia de Koenju; Gabriel Bogossian, escritor e curador; e Victor Leguy, artista e pesquisador brasileiro, ambos radicados em São Paulo. A instalação é composta por três suportes de madeira com uma projeção de vídeo em três canais(1). Ela se baseia no diário da última expedição do etnógrafo e fotógrafo suíço Thomas Bischi, personagem fictício criado por Gabriel Bogossian, que desapareceu nos territórios Guarani entre o norte da Argentina e o sul do Brasil em 1902. Bischi, figura da Belle Époque, era fascinado pelo mundo indígena, que fotografou e desenhou repetidamente; seu diário reflete esse fascínio e apresenta algumas das imagens que produziu.
O personagem foi desenvolvido a partir da combinação das vidas e feitos de diferentes figuras históricas que, nas primeiras décadas da antropologia e da fotografia, exploraram o interior do continente americano. Os contextos que ele visita – Montevidéu do início do século XX e o mundo Guarani, espremido entre plantações de mate e a geopolítica dos Estados-nação da época – são todos informados por relatos históricos e habitados por figuras históricas.
Anteriormente ocupados pelas missões jesuítas, os territórios atravessados por Bischi foram posteriormente palco de diferentes conflitos armados ao longo dos séculos. Eles também carregam as marcas da presença Guarani e de sua complexa e bela religiosidade.
(1) O vídeo monocanal tem 61 minutos de duração e é composto por 28 vídeos curtos criados por Ortega e Leguy, onde cada vídeo corresponde a um dia no texto do diário. Cada artista escolheu livremente um número de dias, produzindo suas próprias perspectivas particulares sobre a jornada bischiana. Os vídeos foram produzidos explorando uma vasta diversidade de recursos e estilos audiovisuais, desde imagens de arquivo até animação 3D, em um procedimento que ambiciona refletir a função de nossa memória e sua bricolagem de elementos. Eles exploram diferentes maneiras pelas quais algumas qualidades políticas das imagens e, em sua estrutura semelhante a capítulos, visam ativar nossa sensibilidade moldada pela Netflix e sua economia de expectativas.

Os 28 vídeos foram exibidos em aarea.co em junho de 2022, como uma instalação de vídeo online na qual podiam ser assistidos cronologicamente ou aleatoriamente. O trabalho foi patrocinado pelo ProAc 2021/Secretaria de Economia Criativa do estado de São Paulo e é um desenvolvimento de uma investigação de Bogossian e Leguy sobre as formas de representação do mundo indígena na América Latina, exibida anteriormente no Museu Existen n. 1.
O trabalho foi premiado pela EAC (Montividéu - Uruguai) e recentemente na Bienal de Tenerife TEA - Espanha.

WALKERS, 2020-2024
WALKERS is a multimedia site specific installation by Ariel Kuaray Ortega, Guarani Mbyá artist and filmmaker based in Koenju village; Gabriel Bogossian, writer and curator, and Victor Leguy, Brazilian artist and researcher, both based in São Paulo. It comprises three wooden supports with a three channel video projection(1); The installation is based on the diary of the last expedition of the Swiss ethnographer and photographer Thomas Bischi, fictional character created by Gabriel Bogossian, who disappeared in the Guarani territories between the north of Argentina and the south of Brazil in 1902. Bischi, a belle époque figure, was fascinated by the indigenous world, repeatedly photographed and drawn by him; his diary reflects this fascination and brings some of the images he produced.
The character was developed after the combination of the lives and deeds of different historical figures that, in the first decades of anthropology and of photography, explored the hinterlands of the American continent. The contexts that he visits – Montevideo of the beginning of the 20th century and the Guarani world, squeezed between farms of mate and nation States geopolitics of the period – are all informed by historical reports and inhabited by historical figures.
Formerly occupied by the Jesuit missions, the territories crossed by Bischi were later stage for different armed con- flicts along the centuries. They bear also the marks of the Guarani presence and their complex and beautiful religiosity.
(1) The single channel video is 61’ long and is composed of 28 short videos created by Ortega and Leguy, where each video corresponds to a day in the text of the diary. Each artist chose a free amount of days, producing their own particular perspectives on the Bischian journey. The videos were produced exploring a vast diversity of audiovisual resources and styles, from found footage to 3D animation, in a procedure that ambitions to reflect the function of our memory and its bricolage of elements. They explore different ways some political qualities of images and, in their chapter-like structure, aim to trigger our Netflix-shaped sensibility and its economy of expectation.
The 28 videos were exhibited at aarea.co in June, 2022, as an online video installation in which they could be watched chronologically or randomly. The work was sponsored by ProAc 2021/ Secretaria de Economia Criativa of the state of São Paulo and it is a development of an investigation by Bogossian and Leguy on the forms of representation of the indigenous world in Latin America, previously shown at O museu inexistente n. 1.
The work was awarded by the EAC (Montivideo - Uruguay) and recently at the Tenerife Biennial TEA - Spain.
